Launching xterm is very slow

I am using autologin with xinit. When I try to launch a terminal (xterm, sakura, etc) it is very slow. When I quit the window manager, I can see on the screen console some ERROR messages but it goes back to relogin so fast I cannot make out the messages. There is no .xsession-errors file available. Is there a way for me to capture these error messages displayed on the console … it may lead to the direction as to why launching an xterm takes so long.

Usually, “slow” here implies a graphics driver problem.

Have a look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see what X11 is doing.

The file may be in ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log instead.

Can you post your ~/.zprofile or ~/.bash_profile

Yes the file is actually in ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log.

It’s size prevents me from posting in this reply. I’ll have to split it up. But it’s hard to determine from it what is causing the delay I see.

Here is my ~/.zprofile

[ -f ~/.zshrc ] && source ~/.zshrc

# automatically run startx when logging in on tty1
[[ -z $DISPLAY && $XDG_VTNR -eq 1 ]] && exec startx

The Xorg.0.log file first part:

Try changing this to not use exec

[[ -z $DISPLAY && $XDG_VTNR -eq 1 ]] && startx

In the very least this will make it so you aren’t logged back in immediately when exiting the session.

Your xorg log looks fine, there’s no errors or warnings that would indicate an issue so I don’t think it’s that.

Thanks @natemaia. That enabled me to view the error when I killed the window manager.

Thanks very much for the assist @natemaia and @ThoamsAdam. It turned out to be a zsh autocompletion script that was causing the slow down. I took it out and the speed is back to normal.
