Sid scared me, even in the films 
Sparky worked well for me, I just didn’t like the look of it in XFce form (the Start button anyway). It has a couple of releases with extra software and codecs added; a gamer’s release which has PlayOnLinux and a multimedia one.

Fedora have an i3 spin that’s minimal, j used it for a while it, also try freebsd that gives a very minimal install
